An ardent admirer of Beethoven, before whom he had the privilege to play when he was still a child, Liszt was also one of his greatest performers. This concert thus brings together two geniuses, one representing Classicism at its zenith, the other full-blown Romanticism, and who both profoundly revitalized the musical language of their time – as proved by Beethoven’s Fifth and Seventh Symphonies, powerfully innovating works, and by Liszt’s Totentanz, a masterly evocation of a danse macabre, whose virtuosity is equalled only by that of the First Piano Concerto.
